SSMC Logo

SSMC is one of SEAZA’s standing committees and has the responsibility of developing, managing, overseeing and evaluating the SEAZA Ex Situ Population Management Framework and Regional Collection Plan.

SSMC envisions that all SEAZA member-zoos have healthy and sustainable ex situ populations that can contribute to global biodiversity conservation in the Southeast Asian region, as well as potentiate the zoos’ outreach capability, by helping to reconnect people with nature, inspiring care and respect for all animals and their habitats.

SSMC oversees population management activities led by Taxon Advisory Groups (TAGs), SEAZA Species Coordinators (SSC), SEAZA Studbook Keepers (SSK), SEAZA member-zoos and other SEAZA Committees. It also oversees the development and implementation of Regional Collection Plans, the functions of SEAZA Species Management Programs (SSMPs), the participation of SEAZA member-zoos (and non‐members) in SSMPs, the development and publications of Annual Report and Recommendations and Best Practice Guidelines for each program. The Committee promotes and advocates responsible, welfare-focused and scientific management of zoo populations.
